Ultra Violet units enable water to pass around a clear crystal tube which houses a special UVC emitting light bulb. To some extent this has a sterilizing effect on the water helping to keep it healthy for your fish.

By far the most useful effect it has is to make waterborne algae swell and clump together until the particles are large enough to be trapped within the filter media thus clearing the pond of green water so long as the filter is regularly cleaned.

These units are simply plumbed into the pipe work above ground immediately after the pump regardless of where the pump is situated, as the water must flow through UV units while under pressure and they must be wired up to a mains voltage supply.

When buying a UV unit ensure you get the correct wattage for your ponds volume of water (this varies according to the make), and also check on the price of spare bulbs as these need changing every spring and are costly.
